New research suggests that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
