Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
